    Buying lubricants in South Africa

Lubricant is the cheapest upgrade to any intimate experience and the one most often bought wrong. Water-based is the default: compatible with every toy material and every condom, easy to rinse, safe internally. Silicone-based lasts far longer and suits shower play and anal use, but it must never touch a silicone toy — it bonds to the surface and leaves it permanently tacky. Hybrids sit in between; check the label for toy-safe.

Skip household oils. Coconut oil, baby oil and body lotion degrade latex condoms, are not pH-balanced for intimate tissue, and are difficult to wash out. If you get recurring irritation, look at your lube ingredients before blaming a toy — glycerin, parabens, nonoxynol-9 and "tingling" agents are the usual culprits.

A dedicated toy cleaner is the second thing worth adding. Soap residue left on a toy is one of the most common causes of next-day irritation, and harsh antibacterial soaps make it worse.

    What to look for

    • Water-based lube with any silicone toy, always.
    • Silicone-based lube for shower play and anal use — on glass, steel or skin only.
    • Glycerin-free formulas if you are prone to thrush.
    • Toy cleaner plus complete drying prevents most irritation and material damage.

    Frequently asked questions

Which lubricant is safe with silicone toys?
Water-based, always. Most hybrids are fine but check the label. Silicone-based lubricant permanently damages silicone toy surfaces.
Can I use coconut oil as lubricant?
It is not recommended. Coconut oil degrades latex condoms, is not pH-balanced for vaginal tissue, and is hard to wash out, which raises irritation and infection risk.
What soap can I use to clean a toy?
A dedicated toy cleaner or a mild unscented soap. Avoid antibacterial or heavily fragranced soaps, alcohol, sanitiser and bleach — they irritate tissue and degrade silicone.
